This update was from October 3rd. If you are a long time lurker to my Facebook page, this is not new, and you can scroll away. But since I have some new folks here, I was thinking I'd do a school series....if you have any questions, please let me know in comments and I'll do my best to answer.
October 3:
I haven't updated you in a couple of weeks on her school. So, she still loves it. And I mean loves it. She has settled in well. There are two groups of kiddos based on age and skill. Gaia seems to fit somewhere in between, which means that here, she is able to gain mastery by helping other students when she is paired up or when she has finished her work and can help others.
They all have real jobs that help run the classroom. Last week, her and a partner had to wash lunch and snack dishes for the classroom. This week, she collects and passes out papers and folders. Other jobs include sweeping the floor, putting the games and materials away, stacking the pillows they use to sit and lay on while they work on the floor.
She still loves the lunches. Today's lunch was lentils, rice, and a kale, lettuce, tomato, cucumber salad with a passionfruit dressing. It's vegetarian and freshly made everyday, organic and a lot of it is grown on the property.
They get a half hour for snack and recess. Then at lunch, they get an hour. In America, she got fifteen minutes for morning snack, and only a half hour for lunch. They love to jump on the trampoline during their freetime. Today, a monkey in the trees above them peed down onto the trampoline. It missed all of them but was definitely a funny moment.
The choker you see on Gaia in this picture was a project today. The class mascot is an octopus and she heads up an ongoing scavenger and treasure hunt of sorts. Today, the mascot had collected flowers and leaves that she thought were pretty and made a necklace. Their job was to scavenge what they thought was pretty and craft jewelry for themselves.
The morning was spent in math, as it's Tuesday. Lots of math games, movement activities and whiteboard stuff. For example, one of Gaia's favorite math games is red light, green light with math equations. You can't move until you solve the equation, and then you move that number of spaces.
It really is an amazing place.
