I'm in bed, it's 9:45 pm and I'm just about to go to sleep when I look up at the ceiling and see what looks like a bat spread out almost directly above my head. It's massive. My ceilings are about 20 feet tall and even from this distance it looks huge. It's all black, has an odd shape and is laying flat. So, I discard bat, although the wing shape is similar.
Some internet sleuthing later, and I'm fairly certain what I'm starting at is a 7 inch across black witch moth, which a large bat-like dark colored moth and roams from Texas to Brazil. According to folklore, in many cultures it's considered a bad omen. Mexico, Jamaica and Argentina consider it to be a harbinger of death when it flies into the house. Fun fact, in the book Silence of the Lambs, it was this moth pupae that Buffalo Bill stuffed into his victims mouths. The movie changed it to a death's head hawkmoth pupae...the more you know.
Now here's my dilemma. One of my cats won't even know it's in the bedroom. The other is a stone cold killer who's already tracking it. There is NO way I can get and put it outside and I can't stay up to protect it. Lana is already in my face trying to explain how she is the bestest girl who won't do anything if I just let her go off the bed. I'm super worried for it. I have no idea how the hell it even came in. I hope it stays up where all she can do is stare longingly....but also, I really don't want it on my face in the morning either. And we don't have mosquito netting. This might be a long night....
